It is the ninth death anniversary of Nazia Hassan today, but she is still remembered by all of the music lovers even after almost a decade to her death. Nazia, also known as The Queen of Pop and by the name Sweetheart of Pakistan, was born on April 03, 1965 in Karachi.

.

Nazia was the first British Asian girl (of Pakistani origin) to make an impact on Bollywood, apart from altogether sweeping the Pakistani pop scene. She was the first real pop star of the Indian music.

Nazia came into the limelight with her breakthrough Indian film (Qurbani) song “Aap Jaisa Koi Meri Zindagi Main Aae”. The song was followed by another hit “Disco Deewane” which took the young generation of the sub-continent by storm. It was like icing on the cake when  Nazia and her brother Zohaib did electrifying songs on the Indian film “Star’. India’s famous magazine, India Today voted Nazia among 50 people who changed the face of India. It certainly is a great proud for Pakistan. Nazia’s success could be measured with an amazing fact that when Lata Mangeshkar ruled the charts, she was the one who outdid her both in terms of sale and popularity. She became the only serious threat to great Lata Ji.

Nazia was a true Pakistani. Her sincerity with the country can be seen when she turned down the offer of song “Made In India”, for the reason that it may not offend the emotions of Pakistanis.

Nazia Hassan and Zohaib Hassan, who formed a perfect duo and among the pioneers of pop and disco music in Pakistan, released their first album ‘Young Tarang’. The volume contained famous songs like “Dum Dum Dee Dee Dum Dum”. They, along with Alamgir and Muhammad Ali Shehki, could be called the trend-setters of disco music in Pakistan.

Nazia and Zohaib duo ruled the hearts of pop music lovers for over a decade. They sang from 1980 till 1992. Their albums were;

* Disco Deewane (1980)
* Star/Boom Boom (1982)
* Young Tarang (1984)
* Hotline (1987)
* Camera Camera (1992)

She did playback singing for various Bollywood movies, like;

* Qurbani (1980)
* Star (1982)
* Dil Wala (1986)
* Ilzaam (1986)
* Main Bulwaan (1986)
* Sheela (1987)
* Saaya (1989)

She was also part of multitude of TV shows.

Nazia was by profession a lawyer. She completed her law education form UK. She also worked in the United Nations in the Security Council from 1992 to 1994. Nazia continued her social work even in New York and worked for children from the UN platform.

Nazia was a lung cancer patient. She fought long against that fatal disease and finally succumbed on 13 August, 2000 in London. Nazia had only a son, Arez, who is now 12 years of age. Her son is with her parents after her sad demise. May her soul rest in peace (aamin).
