PM agrees on removing the 20 paisa tax per SMS

June 20th, 2009

The Prime Minister has ‘promised’ not to impose the 20 paisa tax per sms. The news came after the meeting between the Prime Minister and the Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis, Dr. Farooq Sattar.

Earlier the government had decided to impose a tax of 20 paisa per sms, killing all the bundle sms packages, in the federal budget of financial year 2009-10. The tax was due to be imposed from July 1, 2009. The youth protested against the imposition of tax on Friday. Teenagers were seen angry as they chanted slogans against the government in front of Lahore press club. The Cellphone operators also had a fear that the tax will hamper the growth of the industury.

Removing the 20 paisa tax per sms will bring a sigh of relief for those who love texting while others may still use the SMS screening applications to avoid unwanted texts. :D
