Why Australia? For starters, it’s an English-speaking country, so if you’re planning on studying abroad and your native language isn’t English, it can be beneficial to live in an English-speaking country. Secondly, Australia is one of the top destinations in the world for international students because of its high-quality education system and its reputation as being safe and clean.

What is a student visa?

A student visa is an Australian visa that allows you to study in the country. Students can only stay in the country on a student visa while they are enrolled at their school. To obtain this visa, students must enrol with a designated education provider who has been approved by the government of Australia. If you’re from one of 38 countries that have reciprocal agreements with Australia, are between 18-30 years old, and have completed secondary education or higher, then you may be eligible for this type of visa.

A step-by-step guide on how to get an Australian student visa

The first step is to determine if you are eligible for an Australian student visa. To do so, you must complete the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s online assessment tool. If you have been found eligible for a student visa, the next step is deciding which type of visa is best suited for your needs and situation.

In order to study in Australia, you will need:

  1. A letter of acceptance from your chosen school or institution
  2.  An offer of full-time employment with an Australian employer that is registered as an ‘approved sponsor’ with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection
  3. Proof that you can financially support yourself while studying in Australia
  4. Your passport, which must have at least six months of validity remaining on it when applying for your visa
  5.  Evidence of adequate funds – this means being able to prove you have sufficient funds to cover living expenses for the first year (at least AUD$18,600), enough to pay tuition fees upfront (at least AUD$12,000) and enough spare money to fund unexpected costs like illness or injury (at least AUD$7000).
  6. Evidence of competent English language skills
  7. A comprehensive medical examination
  8. Clear criminal history
  9. Two current passport-size photos
  10. Passport
  11. Application form
  12. Bank statement
  13. Course brochure
  14. Acceptance letter
  15. Job contract
  16. Certificate of completion
  17. Certificate of immunization
  18. Current driver’s licence
  19. Work permit

Things you need before applying for an Australian student visa

  • You will need a degree from an Australian university on the government-approved list of institutions.
  • You will also need to provide evidence that you have enough money to support yourself during your time in Australia, as well as proof that you are not going there primarily because of the education system.
  • The best way to do this is by showing the Australian consulate bank statements with at least AUD$18,000 in your account over the last six months.

Things you need before leaving your country

It is important that you have all of the documents required before you leave your country. For example, an X-ray and medical certificate are needed in order to enter Australia. It’s also a good idea to make sure you have enough money saved up for your study stay. There are different visa options depending on the type of studies you plan on doing. For instance, if you’re going for more than six months and want to work, then it would be necessary to apply for a working holiday visa or a student visa. The Australian government has set strict rules about what can be brought into their country with regard to food items. If your goal is to bring pets with you then there are special requirements that need to be met as well.

What happens after you submit your application?

After you submit your application, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection will send you an acknowledgement of receipt letter. This letter will include information on how long it will take to process your visa application. Once approved, your visa should be ready in about two weeks.

Is an Australian student visa transferable?

Most Australian student visas are not transferable. Australian student visas that are transferable include Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) and a Student visa (subclass 500). These visas can be transferred as long as they have been granted before the applicant leaves their home country, and the destination country allows them entry.
